OFT Announces Compliance Checks on Retail Websites

The Office of Fair Trading is launching a crack down on retail websites as part of an initiative to protect consumers.  The pre-Christmas blitz will target the UK’s top 600 retail websites and check whether consumers are being given correct advice about their rights to cancel an order.  Consumers have an unconditional right to cancel within 7 working days under the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations.  The OFT and local trading standards officers will be looking closely at the websites to check that they comply with the Regulations generally.

For businesses operating retail websites, whether or not they are in the “top 600”, it is important to ensure compliance with the Regulations.  Rickerbys has been advising businesses on the Regulations since they came into effect in 2000 and on all other aspects of e-commerce.  Our team will be happy to conduct a free audit of your website to check compliance.
