Increasing use of expert witnesses - May 07
Courts across the UK are seeing an increase in the call for expert witnesses in a range of cases seeking advice and opinion from specialists from doctors and forensic scientists to surveyors and accountants, according to leading South West law firm Rickerbys.
In answer to the demand from the court system, Rickerbys is hosting a seminar designed to advise and inform witnesses of the process and how they will need to conduct themselves when called to offer expert testimony.
“With a growing need for these experts, changes in legislation and the need to protect expert witnesses against law suits themselves, this seminar is essential for those already involved and becoming involved with the expert witness procedure,” explains Colin Gibson, a partner at Rickerbys.
The event will include presentations, Q and As and also cross examinations from a practising barrister. Delegates will be drawn from professions including accountants, bankers, forensic accountants and surveyors.
“The interactive workshop is designed to encourage participation and questions from the delegates,” explains Colin. “We want to create a forum which allows queries to be raised and reservations to be resolved. This is not a lecture but an opportunity to inform industry experts of the requirements and potential pitfalls involved. The spectrum of topics we will cover will be diverse including agreeing fees for expert services through to codes of conduct and skill requirements. This is an opportunity for people to become aware of the potential challenges involved which will give them the confidence to undertake such an important legal role.”
The landmark event ‘A practical guide to becoming an Expert Witness’ will be held on 31 May, 2pm to 5pm, at Rickerbys Solicitors, Ellenborough House, Wellington Street, Cheltenham, GL50 1YD.
